RE: Attraction Recommendation in TX & Attraction Question in NM

Well, we're really going there to meet another internet RV'er so it's a bit of a double duty trip.

Can anyone tell me the condition of I-10 from El Paso TX to Tucson AZ area? Or is there a red route that might be better...

RE: Attraction Recommendation in TX & Attraction Question in NM

And right on the edge of the cliff!! LOL!! I would be so afraid of my brakes going out on the truck if we took the trailer into the canyon. I think I'll wait 'til I get exhaust brakes. I think I'd like to take one of the horseback tours or the jeep tour through the canyon next spring when things are blooming.

RE: Credit/Criminal Checks for 30+ days at campground?

RV park owners are not providing us shelter or housing. A 'reasonable' level of safety would apply to any campground building and the condition of the grounds. If I am uncomfortable with someone that moves in next to me...or someone next to the site I'm assigned, I merely move on...to another site or out of the campground.

The people in the meth labs aren't going to be bothering the other campers. They would be keeping as low a profile as possible.

RE: Credit/Criminal Checks for 30+ days at campground?

Actually, for those that think they need to stay in the 'credit/background check' parks, it'd be cheaper if they got their own credit report and their own background check done and just hand a copy of it over at the desk of any campground that wants it. In fact, if you have to pay for such checks at a campground, you can request a copy of it. You paid for it; it's yours.

RE: Credit/Criminal Checks for 30+ days at campground?

That's total hogwash! And I'll be dammed if I'd pay any processing fee to any campground that wants a credit check. If they want it, they pay for it. That's their cost of doing business...the way they want to do business.
A credit check doesn't show why a person might have bad credit. A credit report doesn't show if that person is paying off any bills that appear thereon. And, a credit report is not always accurate. Plus, a lot of normally good, upstanding people have (or will have) poor credit reports due to the current economy.
BTW, my credit report is in the average group so this post isn't 'sour grapes'.

Attraction Recommendation in TX & Attraction Question in NM

If you're ever in the Amarillo area, do NOT miss the Palo Duro Canyon in Canyon TX, about 20 minutes south of Amarillo. This is the second largest canyon in the country and is absolutely beautiful!! There are campsites right in the canyon, also. While you're in Canyon, spend a day at the Panhandle-Plains Historic Museum on the West Texas A & M campus.
Now, my question...has anyone ever visited the Living Desert State Park in Carlsbad NM? If so, is it worth visiting and are there any campgrounds nearby?

RE: Credit/Criminal Checks for 30+ days at campground?

A credit check is one thing...and I can understand it if some campgrounds are getting stiffed...but a criminal check is extremely intrusive. The original poster (on the other forum) said he wanted to pay cash up front but they wouldn't accept it. Pretty bad when cash doesn't count.
We stayed in Chapel Hill for 6 months (surgery at Duke) and loved it. No credit check; no criminal check; propane delivered to your site; wifi included in site rental....the guy loved his campground and his job.

Tom, do you mean they actually make YOU pay for the credit/criminal check? What is the name of that campground? If anyone else comes across this practice, please post the name of the campground so others can be aware and be prepared if they still choose to patronize the parks.

RE: Credit/Criminal Checks for 30+ days at campground?

JFG, as a norm, drug dealers and pedifiles have better "business" in the cities, not out in campgrounds. Do you know that your neighbor where you live or across the street or one block over, is not a pedifile or drug dealer?
BTW, the park that was mentioned in the original post was the Columbia River RV Park in Portland OR.

RE: Credit/Criminal Checks for 30+ days at campground?

And you think all employees are honest?? Good Lord, 2oldman, you must have been living under a mushroom for the past 5 years. Who do you think steals more identities...employees of firms, that's who. I don't have a criminal record either but I sure don't want MY personal information spread around. And just because someone clears a criminal record, doesn't mean that person is honest...just means he hasn't been caught yet. Plus, if you kill someone before you're an adult, it's expunged from your record and you have a "clean" record. So sure, 2oldman, stay at that park where you have to undergo a criminal check...but you may be staying next to a killer.

Credit/Criminal Checks for 30+ days at campground?

There's a discussion going on in one of my groups about some campgrounds in Oregon demanding a credit check and a criminal check for those wishing to stay 30 days or longer. My opinion is that if someone at a campground asked for the information, I would most certainly move on but I want to know if this is the norm when one signs up for the 1 month rate. Opinions, please?

RE: Medicare and extra insurance

Would you believe, though, that some insurance rates are less expensive in California!!? My SO pays $117 for his Plan F through the same company. We originally got our insurance in NC when I was at Duke for the surgery. The rate didn't really change at all when we switched to SD. I was a little disappointed there but....

They wouldn't let me pay a full year. That's one of the reasons I'm changing. I could pay a full year on the trailer but not the truck.

We just stick ours down the dump station inlet hole. We filled a tube sock with 2b stone to use as a weight and put that on top of the hose. Is that what you mean?

RE: Medicare and extra insurance

The day we all get health insurance from the govt. is the day you had better start to plan well ahead before you get sick or anything!
My Plan D is with First Health Life ( www.FirstHealthPartD.com ). It DOES have a $175 deductible but the plan I had through work had a $250 deductible so it doesn't bother me that much.
My Plan F is through Mutual of Omaha, United World Life Insurance Company. Haven't had any experience with First Health yet since I've not used them past the deductible (heck, haven't even met the deductible yet) but I'm very pleased with United World/Mutual of Omaha. I recently had LVR surgery (about $50k) and didn't have to pay a dime between Medicare and their coverage.
One thing to be aware of...insurance rates vary depending on what state you've got as a home state. We are South Dakota.

Yep, and you paid a lot more into that union health insurance plan than your wife is paying into the government plan AND they can take that union health plan away from you at a moment's notice.

Portscanner, thanks. That's just what I need. If I can't find it somewhere else, I will go back to that site. $16 for shipping is just a bit much.
Wa8yxm, you can't find them here, there and everywhere. You can find 45* clear here, there and everywhere but not the ones with ears and posts.

Where can you find a clear 45* fitting with the "ears" at both ends?
